Wild Zero: Rock n Roll Never Dies, But Zombies Do

Wild Zero, 1999

Wild Zero is a hyper stylized, funny, sometimes poignant zombie movie that features inspiring messages about love and what it means to be Rock n’ Roll. The gist of the story is that the band Guitar Wolf and their number one fan, Ace, have to save the world from an alien invasion that turns people into zombies. One of the cool trivia facts about this movie is that it was shot entirely in Thailand, and the zombies are Thai army soldiers and their families!

***Spoiler Alert***

The movie is built around the actual band Guitar Wolf — a Japanese power trio that plays fast, aggressive rock n’ roll. Director Tetsuro Takeuchi normally directs music videos, and it shows throughout the film. The band and other characters often appear in stylized moments where they look extra cool or bad ass. It works in the storyline, since as the film progresses, you get the idea that when you believe in the power of rock n’ roll, everything is magic. So, it’s okay if somehow Seiji (also called Guitar Wolf) can shoot lightning out of his hands, or always rides his motorcycle with his guitar slung over his shoulder with no case. Why not? It looks cool, and in the movie, he is the real-life embodiment of rock n’ roll.

The story has a unique take on love and rock n’ roll — at one point in the story, Ace is attracted to a beautiful woman…
